USDA says food prices to increase next year

By the end of next year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture expects food prices to increase by as much has four percent.

Some economists think prices could climb as high as five percent, according to an article on DailyFinance.com. The price for eggs is forecast to rise three percent, and beef prices will jump two percent. Lamb and seafood are expected to see a five-percent rise.

Over a year, a four-percent increase on grocery prices can add up. The consumer who spends $150 a week on groceries will be paying an extra $500 over the entire year.

Economists say meat and dairy will see the steepest price increases at the consumer level.

The reason, according to food giant ConAgra former chief economist Bill Lapp, is pork, beef, chicken and dairy producers are all losing money. As they reduce supplies, that will cause prices to rise......Full text here

US Dought Monitor

NOAA's Dought Monitor reported on Oct 27,2009 , For the next 5 days (Oct.28-Nov.1),during the next 5 days (Oct. 28-Nov. 1), a storm system is expected to intensify in the center of the country. Upslope conditions could trigger heavy snowfall across Wyoming and Colorado early in the period. As the system develops, heavy rains are expected from the Gulf Coast of Texas and Louisiana to Illinois and eastward to New England. Ahead of a system in the Gulf of Alaska, western Washington is expected to be wet. Outside of those areas, little to no drought relief is expected.

The CPC 6-10 day forecast (November 2-6) calls for increased chances of above-median precipitation along the U.S.-Canada border from the Pacific Northwest to the Great Lakes, and below-median precipitation from the Great Basin eastward to the Mid-Atlantic. Above-normal temperatures are favored from the Southwest, across the central and southern Plains, to the Southeast while below-normal temperatures are more likely from the Pacific Northwest to the northern Plains. Colder and drier than normal conditions should prevail in eastern Alaska.

USDA Crop progress

Corn

The USDA reported that the corn harvest is 6% complete as of Sunday, compared to the five year average of 18% done. The lateness of this season's crop is highlighted in Illinois which is just 2% complete, compared to 28% normally. Maturity continues to run well behind schedule, with just 34% of the crop mature compared to 72% normally. That still appears to leave room for the weather to cause some damage yet, should a killing frost emerge. The percentage of the crop rated good/excellent was unchanged at 68%.

Soybeans

The soybean harvest is even further behind than corn, at 5% complete compared to 18% normally. In Illinois it's 1% done as opposed to 21% normally. Nationally 63% of the crop is dropping leaves compared to 77% normally.

Wheat

Winter wheat planting is 36% complete, only slightly behind normal, with top-producing state of Kansas 23% done as opposed to 33% normally. Second top producer Oklahoma is 33% planted, nine points behind normal. The spring wheat harvest is 94% complete compared to 98% normally.
